Your garbage disposal is certainly one of the most useful additions to your kitchen. It may be a tiny appliance tucked beneath the kitchen sink, but it plays an indispensable role in managing food waste and keeping your kitchen clean. However, without proper care, your garbage disposal can start to smell a bit funky. A smelly garbage disposal can make your kitchen less pleasant and inviting. There’s nothing worse than an unpleasant smell wafting off what should be a clean and functional area of your home. The team at Mr. Rooter Plumbing specializes in all things to do with garbage disposals, including garbage disposal replacement. In today’s blog post, we share tips on how to eliminate garbage disposal odor.

Clean the Blades and Interior

The first step is to clean the inside of the garbage disposal. Turn off the power to the unit to ensure safety. Then, use a long-handled brush or an old toothbrush to scrub the interior walls and underside of the rubber splash guard, where food particles get trapped. Do not stick your hands into the disposal, even if it’s off. You can also grind up a handful of ice cubes with a tablespoon of coarse salt to help scrape off grime from the blades and inner chamber. This method not only helps clean the unit but can also sharpen the blades slightly and improve performance.

Use Natural Deodorizers

Once the interior is clean, you can use natural products to freshen the system. Baking soda and vinegar make a powerful odor-fighting combo. Pour half a cup of baking soda into the disposal, followed by a cup of white vinegar. Let the mixture foam and sit for about 10–15 minutes, then flush it down with hot water. Citrus peels are another great option. Grind up lemon, lime, or orange peels to give your disposal a fresh scent and clean the blades with their natural oils. Just make sure to cut the peels into small pieces to avoid clogs.

Flush with Hot Water

Flush your garbage disposal with hot water regularly to wash away grease and food residue that can cause odors over time. After every use, run hot water for about 30 seconds to ensure food particles are cleared from the drain line. You can also fill your sink with hot, soapy water and let it drain through the disposal to give it a deeper rinse.

Avoid Problem Foods

Some foods are more likely to cause buildup and odors than others. Avoid putting fibrous vegetables like celery or corn husks, grease, coffee grounds, pasta, and eggshells into your disposal. These materials can cling to the sides or form blockages that lead to bad smells.

Know When to Call a Professional Plumbing Repair Service

If you've tried all these methods and the odor still persists, there might be a more serious issue, like a clogged drain line or mold growth. In that case, it’s time to call a professional plumber to inspect the appliance and make quick repairs. They can perform an inspection and cleaning to eliminate the problem at its source.
